The most satisfying report I ever wrote had one, plain-text “COMPLETED SUCCESSFULLY, READY FOR RELEASE” line distilled from 5k+ batch records across multiple databases and historians. If abnormal completion, the report provided all the details QA needed to make a judgement call to release, call maintenance, or call automation.

I’m amazed at the beautiful dashboards and reports available today for visualizing a ton of data. But the tool is only 10% of the work. You need to understand the workflow to contextualize data pulled from historians, Alarm/Event databases, MES systems, and other sources. Otherwise, you’re just producing noise.
